Beautiful Achievements

You’ve seen examples of it everywhere—an exceptionally beautiful garden while taking an afternoon stroll through your neighborhood or an architectural wonder on your way home from work. These and many more “beautiful achievements” of individuals, groups, corporations and/or businesses will be honored by Keep Alachua County Beautiful at a special banquet Saturday, January 26, 2002 at the University of Florida Hotel and Conference Center, NW 34th Street and Hull Road.

All nominees will be showcased on a mammoth screen and as each winner is announced a harp and flute fanfare by Silverwood musicians Beth and Boyd Dolan will underscore the drama. The Gainesville High School Color Guard and Drill Team as well as Madrigal Singers will add to the pageantry. A highlight of the first KACB Awards Banquet, “Topping Off the Millennium,” May 19, 2000 was an original video by Bill Evans. He will be part of the entertainment once again and people are anxiously awaiting this year’s creation. The breathtaking ambiance created by the decorating magic of Lorene Junkin from the Gainesville Garden Club’s Begonia Circle will also be repeated. Master of Ceremonies will be TV 20’s Bob Williams and Norm Thomas, Solid Waste Director of Alachua County will be the official photographer.

The Millennium awards banquet received rave reviews from members of the community that were in attendance. Remarks included “Best awards ceremony I’ve ever attended,” “First class all the way,” “It was so dramatic!,” “A fabulous event!” “So well done,” “Everything went so smoothly” “The videos were priceless.” “Delicious food.” “It was beautiful in every way,” “Boy, you really know how to throw a party,” “The decorations were exquisite.” “Congratulations on a wonderful evening.” Sponsors who have signed up once again are the Gainesville Sun, Group 5 Advertising, Boone Waste Management, CH2M Hill, SunTrust, ICM Printing, WUFT TV5, Spain Construction, Waste Watchers and Kinko’s.

Obelisks will be awarded to the first place winners in 16 different categories including Outstanding Adult Personal Achievement, Outstanding Youth Personal Achievement, Outstanding Achievement by Business and Industry, Outstanding Clean Commercial Achievement, Outstanding Achievement by Media/Public Relations, Outstanding Achievement by Clubs and Community Organizations, Outstanding Achievement by Schools and Youth Organizations, Outstanding Achievements by Government, Outstanding Achievement by Neighborhoods, Outstanding Public Arts/ Sculpture, Outstanding Architecture, Outstanding Public Landscaping, Outstanding Residential Yard or Garden, Best Recycling Project, Outstanding Waterway Project, and Outstanding Clean Builder. Second and third place winners in each category will receive plaques. In addition there will be a Judge’s Award and a Chairman’s Award as well as cash awards given to city blocks that have shown the most improvement in each of the neighborhoods. Criteria for awards demands that entries must include one of more of the following: litter prevention and/or control, beautification and community improvement, minimizing solid waste.

Attendees have a choice of four delicious entrees for the dinner and awards ceremony which begins at 7 p.m. A cash bar will precede it at 6 p.m. Cost to attend is $40 per person or $75 per couple. Corporate tables are $500. To make a reservation call Jeanne Rochford at 371-9444.
