Delish 0612: A Slice of

In my everyday life and on my food blog where I write weekly segments, I don’t usually feature recipes tailored for adults only of legal drinking age. It’s not that I don’t enjoy a drink or two—I am only a recent college graduate after all—but I’m usually satisfied with a glass of wine with my meal to keep it simple. However, I was inspired this month to try something a little different. I’ll admit to being slightly obsessed with the series “Mad Men” and not so much for the story but for the picturesque era and spectacular fashion and culture. The characters seem to be drinking in every single scene some cocktail that I would be too intimidated to order—let alone make for myself. So after some research, I found a collection of recipes that are reminiscent of the era but still entirely popular and relevant to any hardworking business person today. Some are very strong and don’t leave a lot of room for interpretation, so I’ve added a few touches that modernize the cocktails—like adding the blue cheese stuffed olives to the dirty martini. And because Florida summers are begging for a refreshing drink either by the pool or with dinner, I’ve included a sangria recipe that will please any party. Step out of your comfort zone this June and treat yourself to a well-deserved cocktail. You don’t have to be a character from a show to enjoy a sophisticated cocktail at the end of the day!

Old Fashioned

2 dashes aromatic bitters

1 sugar cube

1 1/2 oz. of bourbon

1 cherry

1 orange slice

1 lemon wedge

In a tumbler, place the sugar cube and dissolve with the bitters. Fill glass with ice. Top with the bourbon and fruit.

Dirty Martini with Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives

2 1/2 oz. gin

1 1/2 oz. of dry vermouth

1/2 oz. of olive juice

3 to 4 blue cheese stuffed green olives

Pour the vermouth into a martini glass, swirl around the edges and pour out. In a martini shaker, place the gin, olive juice and ice and shake until thoroughly mixed. Strain out into the glass and top with the olives.


1 3/4 oz. bourbon

3/4 oz. of sweet vermouth

1 dash of aromatic bitters

1 cherry

In a martini shaker, place the bourbon, vermouth and bitters and shake with lots of ice. Strain into a martini glass and top with a cherry.

White Summer Sangria

1 bottle Pinot Grigio, or other white wine

3/4 cup simple syrup

Club soda

1/2 cup of peach schnapps

2 peaches, sliced

2 plums, sliced

handful of cherries

1 lime, sliced

In a large pitcher, add the fruit and top with the simple syrup. With spoon, muddle the fruit together until slightly mashed. Pour in the wine and let rest for at least an hour in the fridge. Add the peach schnapps. Then add the club soda to taste, just until bubbly and slightly diluted. Stir together and serve over ice.
